Why can’t Minnesota residents detect Zipper integration? – WCCO

Minneapolis (WCCO) – Zipper integration is meant to be simple. Use both paths and then combine them before the two become one, together like the teeth of a zipper.

That’s when the Minnesota Department of Transportation’s sign tells you to, on purpose.

So why is this concept so difficult for most Minnesota residents? When WCCO reached out to people on Facebook about it, we received comments like “people don’t understand it”, “sounds good in theory” – and more than a few “drivers are stupid”.

Jake Loesch of MnDOT assured his colleagues in Minnesota that they “are not stupid.”

“We fully understand that the whole concept of incorporating a zipper is against human nature,” Loesch said.

He is a passionate supporter of this technology, as are fellow MnDOT.

“It feels like doing the wrong thing because it can feel like you’re slouching, or you’re rocking in class,” Loesch said. “So we’re trying to remind people that it’s not like that, it’s the right thing to do, and it’s going to get you all moving faster.”

40% to 50% faster, according to an MnDOT study.

“But it depends on two things. It depends on people using both lanes of traffic up to the point of merging.” “But also, if you’re in that driveway that stays open, you have to let a car merge in front of you.”

It can be dangerous at times, which is partly why not every state teaches to incorporate zippers. Kansas officials told WCCO that they encouraged this only once.

So if people don’t do it right, should Minnesota stay committed? Loesch says yes.

“If you go through a merging point where the zipper is fused, you will feel the magic,” he said.

In Minnesota, zipping is only meant for building areas, such as when two lanes go down to one. Drivers should not use it in the “exit only” lane and then attempt to cut it down at the last minute.
