After not being named in the match-day squad for Southampton’s first two matches (Premier League) this season, Chelsea-loan Armando Broja made his debut by starting against Newport County in the second round of the Carabao Cup last night.
And what a start for the young striker!
Less than ten minutes later, Broja opened the scoring by being the first to bounce after Nathan Redmond’s shot hit the woods. After about fifty minutes, Bruga scored again in the goal, this time thanks to some good movement and then was found by a nice through ball from Mohamed El Younoussi, who himself had a hat-trick. Since the match was not broadcast on TV, it was difficult to reach the highlights, but you can Watch both goals here. He replaced Bruga an hour later, to be replaced by veteran Shane Long, as Southampton added a couple more to win 8-0. eight!

The accounts of those lucky enough to watch the match in person agree that Broja gave a very good match, showed good rhythm and a constant willingness to turn on the channels. It was a smart and mature performance for the 19-year-old in general, as might be expected given his success at Vitesse last season.
I hope he can build on this debut and go further forward by claiming Premier League minutes – if Ralph Hessenhuttl’s merit goes as expected.
