I felt as if I had entered a room and found Vincent Van Gogh sitting there waiting for me. And I must admit that the meeting brought tears to my eyes.

There is only one known photograph of Van Gogh. It maintains the formal features of a formal fit 19-year-old in dark, faded colours. But the painter who is now widely acclaimed as among our most recognizable modernist figures, left some 35 vibrant self-portraits to posterity, all executed within the last four years of his life.
