Twitter test voting on Twitter

Facebook offers you a variety of icons that show how you feel about a post. Including: Like, love, care, ha ha, wow, sad and angry.

LinkedIn adopts a similar approach, with reciprocal icons: e.g., celebrate, support, love, insight and learn.

Reddit has arrow-shaped and down-icons, tick-tack and Instagram make things easy with the heart button, and has likes and dislikes icons in its YouTube videos.

Now, Twitter has announced that it is experimenting with the Up and Down Vote feature on its platform, which is only available for replies to tweets.

This experience will only be available on iOS:

Collaborative images show the feature up and down arrows, a thumbs up and thumbs down icon, and just a downward icon.

Following the tweet, additional information from Twitter support confirmed that:

  • This research is for ‘now’ purposes only.
  • It does not qualify as a ‘Dislike’ button.
  • Only you will see your download.
  • The order of your answers will not be affected.

When asked further questions in the comments section, Twitter reiterated that it should not be seen as an ‘unwanted’ button:

Twitter clarified that the experiment is to inform the platform of the compatibility of these conversations with tweets.

Additional insights from the user researcher on Twitter

Cody Elm, whose profile states that he is a user researcher on Twitter, retweeted the post and followed along with additional information.

The comments in the thread make it clear that past research highlights that replies that are informative, helpful, positive and funny are considered the best type of response to tweets.

According to the researcher, the aim of this latest research approach is to empower people to express their views on the quality of private responses, and to give Twitter a ‘more proportionate opinion’ without ‘publicly embarrassing others’. ۔

Research will also determine if this feature is valuable to consumers.

Read the last thread:

“As a researcher, this experiment is a great opportunity to learn about the ways in which we can improve conversation rankings on Twitter.

We look forward to seeing how a response vote can improve the conversation on Twitter.

Twitter user responses

As I scrolled through some of the responses in the thread, there were numerous comments from users expressing concerns that this would make the platform more toxic and that there was a potential for misuse.

Consumers seem to be focusing on the bottom voting aspect rather than the up-voting feature, although the up-vote will be visible, basically acting as a ‘like’.

Additionally, comments are requested to seek approaches to bring more positivity to the Twitter platform.

There were also some appropriate comments from Twitter asking for the edit button to be implemented, so it will be interesting to see if this leads to research findings.

Twitter’s initial tweet did not specify a deadline for the experiment, and it will be interesting to see in the light of their responses whether it is an experiment that led to the removal of the feature. Will or will not
