The Turkish Defense Ministry said, on Friday, that a Turkish soldier was killed while trying to prevent people from crossing into Syria.

The ministry said in a statement that infantry specialist Sergeant Savas Dink was injured “during the intervention (against) people who tried to cross illegally from Turkey into Syria.” He was taken to a hospital in Kielce, where he died.

Al-Jumhuriya newspaper reported that the 29-year-old was shot.

The smuggling routes that foreign fighters have used in recent years to join the Syrian civil war cross the Turkish-Syrian border.
