Top 10 PhillyVoice High School Football: La Salle replaces St. Joe’s Prep as the new #1 in the area

It’s been a long time. About four years. For the first time since 2017, the region has a new No. 1 team, La Salle.

The Explorers have made it 3-0 this season with victories over Bishop McDevitt (Harrisburg), Malvern Prep and now a very good team of Imhotep Charters, 13-8, last weekend. It’s the same Imhotep team that started the season with victories over Pittsburgh Central Catholics (12-6) and Maryland giants Dimatha Catholics (14-10) – the same Dimatha team that defeated South Jersey’s No. 1, Holy Spirit, 28-7, in the season opener.

For the first time in four years, St. Joe’s Prep from the lead, after losing 28-21 to Milton, is a very good public school program from Georgia that ranked 75th nationally. The loss interrupted the Hawks’ 18-game winning streak going back to 2019. It’s a game the Hawks were in a position to win – and they know it.

La Salle, who struggled offensively against the state’s best PIAA 5A defense, used a late ground game and Imhotep’s costly foul to win in the end.

La Salle defender Abed Carter, who is going to Penn State, said. “I think this is the start of some good things. Speaking to the seniors on our team, we know this is our chance to do something special. We take it one game at a time, but the seniors on this team never beat prep.

“When it’s time to play prep, we’ll be ready.”

That time will come two weeks from now, when Prib and La Salle meet on Saturday, October 2 at the legendary Franklin Field in Pennsylvania.

This week, Prep hosts Gonzaga Prep (DC) Friday at 7 p.m. at Franklin Field, La Salle hosts Haverford School Friday at 7 p.m. at Wissahickon High School, and Archbishop Wood Malvern Prep on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Franklin Field.

In Zone 1 Category 6A, undefeated Downingtown East hosts Bishop Shanahan at 7 p.m., undefeated Upper Dublin travels to North Penn on Friday at 7 p.m. On the South Jersey side, St. Augustine Prep hosts St. Joseph (Hamonton) on Friday 6 o’clock
