The curtain lifted on Broadway Sunday night as the 74th Annual Tony Awards were finally held after an unspecified hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic.
One of the night’s biggest stars was Leslie Odom Jr., who hosted “The Tony Awards: Broadway Returns!” At Winter Garden Theater in New York City.
Held after the main awards show, the live music concert marked the long-awaited comeback of Broadway. The COVID-19 pandemic has kept theaters dark for the past 18 months.
Odom, who won a Tony Award for his performance as Aaron Burr in “Hamilton,” opened the show with a musical number, “Broadway Returns,” which paid tribute to the stage’s much-anticipated comeback.
The song began with a Philly native singing on the streets of the Manhattan Theater District. He made his way to the stage and on stage. The song included references to several popular Broadway shows, and a plea from Odom for people to get vaccinated against COVID-19.
The actor opened the party with a few remarks about how Broadway theaters will look and feel different for the foreseeable future. Anyone attending a Broadway show must be fully vaccinated and wear a face mask.
“Every theater on Broadway is going to look like this for a while and that’s okay,” Odom said. “We are a community and that’s what a community does. We look out for each other.”
Odom and his wife, Nicolette Robinson, also gave a fantastic performance of “You Matter to Me” from the popular Broadway musical “Waitress”.
The party featured performances from the three nominees for Best Music, and included the popular Broadway duet and other special guests.

The Tony Awards were originally scheduled for June 2020. Nominations were drawn from only 18 eligible plays and musicals From the 2019-20 season. During the previous season, nominations were taken from 34 shows.
Odom which hosted the live concert on Sunday night was just the latest development in what has been a great year for East Oak Lane residents.
Odom also earned an Emmy Award nomination for his role as Burr in Hamilton, which debuted as a film adaptation last summer on Disney+. Odom and Robinson They celebrated the birth of their second child This year too.
Odom will also appear in “Many Saints in Newark,” The much-anticipated movie “The Sopranos” when it premieres in theaters and on HBO Max on Friday.
