According to outgoing CEO Dan Kathy, Chick-fil-A has plans for further international expansion.

In an interview with the Atlanta Business Chronicle, Kathy outlined her hopes of expanding beyond the United States after retiring as CEO. Chick-fil-A is really good at caring for this very, very demanding customer. And that’s how we take this kind of industry, and we export to Asia, Europe, South America.

“If we can be the best in the US market, Katie closed the door on what’s going to happen when we enter Asia. I’m very excited about that,” said Kathy.

In 2019, Chick-fil-A went from just US operating locations to having restaurants in the US, UK and Canada. The chain has previously said it plans to open at least 15 locations in the Toronto area.

The international expansion for Chick-fil-A has not always been easy.

“This location will help us understand more about consumer interest in our brand and signature menu items,” a spokesman told Insider about China’s first UK location in 2019. Prior to its opening, Chick-fil-A was experimenting with pop-up shops in the UK market, including a year-long pop-up. “We know the UK and Scotland are one of the most attractive and high-priority destinations, especially for Chick-fil-A.”

In 2020, China’s last UK locations closed amid protests over donations for anti-LGBTQ political reasons. Chick-fil-A no longer donates for any political reasons, unlike many of its rivals.

The family-owned chain announced Andrew Cathy, the grandson of founder Trevor Cathy, as the next CEO, starting in November. Andrew’s resume suggests that international expansion could be a priority for Chick-fil-A. He has led international strategy since 2016.

While pursuing international success, Chick-fil-A is in a comfortable position as America’s Favorite Brand, with a consistently busy drive-thru and the largest store sales in the business.
