The best VR headset to buy in 2021.

Editors note: A new version of Quest 2 doubles the storage of the $ 299 model to 128GB, and includes a silicone cover for a foam face piece after voluntary recall of the foam course earlier this year. The reason is the fear of facial irritation with small subsets of customers. Current Quest 2 owners can order a free silicone cover.

During the last year and a half, where people were. More distant than ever, Virtual reality took on different meanings. Good: Self-made and wireless; Smart touch controllers double as a comfortable gaming PCVR headset.

Bad: Facebook account required.

At $ 300 and nothing else, Oculus Quest 2 offers virtual reality games and an in-depth VR experience anywhere. It’s faster, shorter, cheaper and more comfortable to wear than the original Quest, but you’ll need to log in to Facebook to use it. The latest version has a storage bump up to 128 GB, which is one of its biggest drawbacks (no expandable storage).

Quest 2 reminds me of the Nintendo Switch for its versatility and fun, and it only takes a few seconds to get started and fits the glass really well. The standalone VR headset features a self-made motion tracking and full motion six degree freedom (aka 6DoF) VR controller that is identical to the PC-required Oculus Rift, as well as surprisingly high resolution displays and built-in. Apps in the speaker are downloaded to the onboard storage of the standstone headset. Its more limited mobile processor still plays games like Beat Saber, Mass and Super Hot VR very well, and you can also connect to a PC using a USB-C cable if you wish.

Facebook has discontinued the Oculus Rift S, so Quest 2 is the best and only option on the Oculus VR right now. But PCVR users have many other headset options.

Good: Really sharp high-res display, great audio, comfortable design.

Bad: Minor controllers.

If you are looking for the best image quality in consumer VR, HP’s latest VR headset has won. For serious gamers (or VR racing sim fans), this VR technology may be your best choice. The 2,160×2,160 per eye resolution and 114-degree field view are the best in this price range, and the lightweight, comfortable headset also features terrific drop-down speakers designed by Valve. It’s technically a Microsoft Windows Mixed Reality headset that likes to launch in Microsoft’s native Windows 10 VR ecosystem, but it’s compatible with Steam VR and also works with these games and apps. Built-in camera-based room tracking is easier to set up than Wall Index’s external base stations, but is more prone to tracking errors. Controllers based on Microsoft’s VR controller design feel ugly compared to included controllers, Oculus Touch controllers or Valve Index controllers. Also, the over-the-air speaker is your only audio choice: no headphone jack.

GoodAmazing Future Controllers: Works with high quality headset WAV hardware.

Bad.: Expensive room setup and teaching cable required.

The Valve headset could be the most exciting experience of PC virtual reality this year, just for its new controllers. The valve’s “nickel” controllers are sensitive to pressure and can track all five fingers, making them almost like gloves. Many apps don’t make the most of them yet, but Valve’s hardware is a mix and match with the HTC Vive, which is also built on the Steam VR platform. The Index headset has excellent audio and a really fast, wide field of view display.

The index uses external “lighthouse” boxes, which means you need to arrange them in the room first. It’s not as self-contained as the Oculus Rift S, which can track in-room headset cameras, or the HTC View Cosmos. It’s definitely not wireless either, but if you already have some WAV hardware, you can combine and match parts of the index.

Good: Too many games low cost; Works with many PS4 controllers such as DualShock and Move.

Bad: Resolution is not modern Sony has not yet developed great VR controllers that match the competition, but a new version is coming next year.

Sony’s years-old PSVR headset is still the only head-mounted display for game consoles, and its screen still offers an amazingly immersive experience. Even better, this tutored headset often sells for less than $ 200, sometimes even thrown at sports. But Sony has confirmed that it is working on a next-generation PSVR headset for the PS5 (with a new set of controllers) that could arrive in 2022, if you want to wait. In the meantime, Sony has delivered (and continues to deliver) many great virtual reality games, many of them exclusive. All you need is PSVR and PlayStation 4 and you can start playing. (Here are some good games to get started.) This VR system is showing its age compared to the alternatives. And, while the new PS5 will work with the old PSVR, you’ll need a camera adapter in addition to your old PS4 controllers and camera.
