Suicide bombing in Baghdad: Dozens dead and dozens wounded in an explosion in Iraq’s crowded market | Iraq
Security and hospital sources said a suicide bomber killed at least 35 people and wounded more than 60 in a crowded market in Baghdad’s Sadr City neighborhood, on the eve of Eid al-Adha.
Nashir news agency said on Telegram that the Islamic State group had claimed responsibility for the attack. She added that one of its fighters detonated his explosive vest in the crowd. Hospital sources said that the death toll may rise because some of the wounded are in critical condition.
The Prime Minister’s Office said in a brief statement that Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi held an urgent meeting with senior security leaders to discuss the attack.
President Barham Salih published a tweet in which he said: “With a terrible crime targeting civilians in Sadr City on the eve of Eid… We will not rest until the roots of terrorism are cut off.”
In April, the Islamic State militant group claimed responsibility for a car bomb attack on a market in Sadr City, Baghdad’s main Shiite neighborhood, that killed four people and wounded 20 others.
