LOS ANGELES (AFP) – Southern California hired Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley as its next coach on Sunday in a stunning and rare move from a traditional college football team that beat another highly accomplished coach.

Riley went from 55 to 10 in five seasons leading the Sooners, won four major titles in 12, and featured in three football playoffs in his first coaching job. The 38-year-old Texan is widely regarded as one of the best offensive minds in the college game, and the USC sold him the opportunity to bring the Trojans back to their glory days as a contender for the National Championship and number one West Coast program.

Gainesville, Florida (AFP) – Florida has appointed Louisiana Lafayette player Billy Napier to be its next football coach.

The move ends a quick process in which the Gators land their first target.

The 42-year-old will be staying with Rajen Cajones this week as they prepare to host Appalachian State in their Sun Belt Conference Championship game on Saturday.

Florida has scheduled an introductory press conference with Napier for December 5th. He will replace Dan Mullen, who was sent off last Sunday after the team’s fourth defeat in five games. Napier is 39-12 in four seasons at ULL.

Pullman, Washington (AFP) – Washington State removed the interim flag and appointed a head coach for Jake Dickert Saturday night after leading the Cougars to a record 3-2 following the sacking of Nick Rolovich.

Momentum was growing for Deckert to secure the job permanently and his nomination culminated in a massive 40-13 defeat to Washington in the Apple Cup that cut short a seven-game losing streak against Husky.

Deckert was promoted from defensive coordinator to interim head coach in October after Rolovich was fired for refusing to fulfill the state’s mandate for staff to receive a COVID-19 vaccine or exemption. Rolovitch and four other assistant coaches were fired.

The school announced that Deckert had agreed to a five-year contract.

DURHAM, NC (Associated Press) – David Ktcliffe will not return for his 15th season as Duke coach after the school announced a “mutual agreement to break up” Sunday following the Atlantic Coast Conference’s no-win record.

The school’s announcement came a day after the Blue Devils (3-9, 0-8) closed out a three-win season with a 47-10 loss at home to Miami. It marked Duke’s first no-league roster in the league under Cutcliffe, who transformed the Blue Devils from one of the nation’s worst performers into a regular contender and claimed a league title in the ACC in 2013 before the program plummeted in the past two seasons.

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) – Sonny Dykes is set to be introduced as the new TCU head coach Tuesday after four seasons at SMU, according to a person familiar with the decision.

The person spoke to the Associated Press on the condition of anonymity on Sunday because there were no official announcements from TCU or SMU amid numerous reports citing unnamed sources that Dykes will be the new Horned Frogs coach. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram was the first to report plans for the Dykes to be officially presented on Tuesday.

The return of levees to the other side of Dallas-Fort Worth is a long-awaited move. The son of former Texas Tech coach Spike Dykes has been considered a high-profile candidate for the Frogs job since Gary Patterson and TCU mutually agreed on October 31 to separate with four games remaining in the season.

The 31-year-old Semien hit .265 and hit career highs with 45 homers, 102 RBIs and 15 base steals in his only season in Toronto. The 45 Homer was an MLB record for a second baseman. The Minnesota Twins and quarterback Byron Buxton agreed a seven-year, $100 million contract Sunday, according to a person familiar with the deal.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity to the Associated Press because the contract has not yet been finalized and because he is awaiting a physical examination.

Seattle (AFP) – The Seattle Mariners acquired All-Star II captain Adam Frazier in a deal with the San Diego Padres on Saturday.

The move cost Seattle two young players, but it meets one of the team’s biggest needs going into the off-season; Added a midfielder to pair with shortstop JP Crawford. Frazier’s versatility means that sailors can still handle other potential transactions should another middle player become available.

The Padres family acquired left-back Ray Kerr and defensive player Cory Rozier.

St. PETERSBURG, Florida (AP) – Wonder Franco and the Tampa Bay Rays have terminated a $182 million, 11-year contract that includes the club’s option for the 2033 season.

The Shortstop deal, which could be worth $223 million if the club’s option is implemented and incentives are reached, was announced on Saturday.

Tampa Bay won the AL East award in 2021.

The contract is the biggest financial commitment for a player in Rays’ 24-year history. It’s also the biggest deal in Major League history for a player with less than a year of Major League service time.

NHL

The NHL has postponed two more games due to coronavirus-related reasons, making it five games so far this season.

The New York Islanders’ upcoming games on Sunday at the Rangers and Tuesday at the Philadelphia Flyers were postponed after additional members of the squad went into the NHL’s COVID-19 protocol on Saturday.

General manager Lou Lamoreello said striker Casey Sisikas has become the latest player to test positive. The islanders would have had up to eight unavailable players.

The association said that the possibility of additional spread contributed to the cancellation of the matches of the islanders until at least Tuesday, for the time being.

MONTREAL (AFP) – The Montreal Canadiens fired general manager Mark Bergiveen and other executives on Sunday amid ice struggles just months after advancing to the Stanley Cup final.

The Canadians announced the firing of Bergvin along with GM assistant Trevor Timmins and Paul Wilson, senior vice president of public affairs and communications.

Canadians said Jeff Gorton will serve as executive vice president of hockey operations while the team searches for a new general manager. Bergevin was in his tenth season as captain of the team.

JOHANNESBURG (AFP) – South African golfer Thurston Lawrence won the Joburg Open on Saturday after the third round was abandoned due to bad weather, meaning the score was called up after 36 holes of the opening event on the DP World Tour.

The event was scaled back to a 54-hole course late Friday to help non-South African players and tournament workers return to their home countries, a move sparked by international travel restrictions imposed on South Africa due to the emergence of a new type of COVID- 19 in the country.

Lawrence took a four-shot lead at the end of the second round, hitting a 65-65 shot to be at 12 under the overall average. He took his first win on what was previously called the European Tour.

obituary

KANSAS CITY, MO (AP) – Hall of Fame linebacker Curley Kolb, who helped the Kansas City Chiefs win their first Super Bowl during a 14-year career in the NFL, has died of complications from pancreatic cancer. He was 75 years old.

Kolb announced this month that he had been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. His wife, Colette Bloom Culp, “on behalf of our family and with a broken heart” announced the All-Pro’s death five times.

Kolb was considered one of the strongest players in the NFL during his football career, although his position on the inside of the defensive line meant his play often went unnoticed. Selected to participate in six Pro Bowls, he was second only to Steelers Cornerback Mel Blount for AP Defensive Player of the Year after the 1975 season.
