Sir Elton joins a list of illustrious recipients, including broadcaster Sir David Attenborough, actress Dame Judi Dench, petit Sir Paul McCartney and chef Delia Smith.

Hits over the years include Rocket Man, I Still Stand and Blue Eyes with Sir Elton who hit his first UK single in 16 years last month with Cold Heart, a collaboration with Dua Lipa.

The musician has also devoted much of his life to philanthropy, including his Elton John Aids Foundation, has been pushing for action on HIV/AIDS – which still kills hundreds of thousands of people annually – and encouraging people to get tested.

Sir Elton gave fans an update earlier this month ahead of his hip surgery – revealing he “can’t move sideways” – and vowed to “make up” for fans who were excited to see him perform.

The music legend explained that he is in constant pain and his hip is unlikely to hold up for the duration of the tour, which is why the decision was made to have surgery before getting back on the road.

Asked about his health by Lauren, after he decided to postpone his tour, Elton said: ‘I wouldn’t be 100 per cent fit. I wouldn’t be 100 percent confident, because most of the time my thighs hurt.

I can’t move sideways. I can’t get in and out of the car. And the decision had to be made, because I don’t want to go on stage and give less than 100 percent.

“And I don’t know – with a year and a half of tours to go – how long Hip will last.

It probably won’t. So it is better to do it now.

“Unfortunately everyone is disappointed this year but I’ll make it up to them, and I’ll be in much better shape.”

As Elton told Lauren about his two sons — Zachary, 10, and Elijah, 8, who he shares with husband David Furnish, 59 — gushes: “They love music. They put their summer playlist together this year.

I bought them all the Beatles CDs, The Who, Bowie and everything. All the great British artists. They love all kinds of music. They are very proud that I have had such great success with Dua Lipa.”

Elton previously revealed he was in “extreme pain” after injuring his hip and was advised to have surgery “as soon as possible”.

In September, he detailed his “deep sadness” for the postponement of the tour before explaining: “I fell awkwardly on a hard surface and I’ve been in excruciating pain and discomfort in my thigh ever since.”

He wrote: “It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I have been forced to reschedule the 2021 dates of my Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour of Europe and the UK to 2023,” with the tour scheduled to begin in New Orleans in January 2022.

“At the end of my summer vacation, I fell awkwardly on a hard surface and I’ve been in excruciating pain and discomfort in my hip ever since.”
