In addition to bats, the authors caution that certain species of cats, civets, and mermaids found in the area are susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 infection, and could eventually serve as an intermediate host for transmission to humans. Furthermore, populations of pangolins seized during anti-smuggling operations in 2020 showed signs of the presence of viruses of the SARS-CoV-2 sub-strain.
