Sajid Javid announces COVID-19 today

House authorities said Health Minister Sajid Javid will make a statement in the House of Commons on the latest developments in the Covid-19 crisis at 11am on Friday.

It comes after Mr Javid said the new variant identified in South Africa “may be more transmissible” than the Delta strain and added “the vaccines we currently have may be less effective”.

Downing Street said Corona Virus The variant identified in cases in South Africa and Botswana will remain under ‘careful investigation’.

A No 10 spokesperson said: “We continue to monitor new variants as they emerge with our partners around the world.

“We have one of the largest genomic sequencing programs here in the UK that allows us to detect and trace variants as they emerge, and as we have done throughout the pandemic, we will continue to monitor this particular species and keep it under investigation.”

Asked if travel restrictions would be needed before Christmas as a result of this alternative, the spokesperson said: “We will continue to keep the latest situation, the most recent scientific evidence and data, under review, as we have done throughout the pandemic.

“We’ve said before that if we think we need to take action we will continue, but we will continue to monitor this and other variables in the same way we have done throughout the pandemic.”
