Rio Ferdinand has urged his ex-United teammate Phil Jones (centre) to ‘find a new club’.
Jones has two years left on his £130,000-a-week contract at Old Trafford and is eager to rebuild his United career.
However, his chances of reclaiming a regular starting point are slim following the £42m arrival of Raphael Varane and Ferdinand has called up time on his former teammate’s stay at Old Trafford.
The former United player claimed Jones (right) should have left when Chris Smalling (left) left
“He’s holding the position of one of the youth team players on this team now,” Ferdinand said. Atmosphere with FIVE.
“He’s had a lot of injuries… I was on the same team as Phil Jones, he came from Blackburn when he was a little kid, and everyone was saying he’d be such a great player.
“The potential is huge but injuries completely killed his career and then confidence issues at certain times as well.
He was not able to fully prove himself in the team. Whether it’s injuries, lack of form or lack of confidence.
‘I think he should have gone a long time ago. He should have gone before Chris Smalling went. Find a new club and play football.

Transfermarkt lists 23 separate issues during Jones’ career with United, most recently a serious knee injury he has spent the past 18 months fighting.
This means that a decade at United has seen Jones play just 224 times, less than half the games the team has played.
In the 2013-2014 season, he made 39 appearances but has not topped 30 since, amid a recurring nightmare of injuries.
But despite spending most of his United career at the injury table, the Red Devils hierarchy offered Jones a four-year contract extension in 2019, leaving him tied to Old Trafford until 2023.

He has lacked consistency throughout his career at Man United. This is a fact, for all the reasons I mentioned before,” Ferdinand added.
“I am baffled by how he still gets a new deal at the club given the past few years at the club. It doesn’t make sense to me how he gets a new deal.
I remember that day you had to do some graft to get a new deal. You have to give performances, you have to be a vital member of the team. Phil Jones is not.
You did well. Listen, good luck to him if you can get by. Staying at Man United is a great job, but I look at it as a person, would you really be happy sitting there all these years.

‘I suspect [Danny] Drinking water was a little the same [at Chelsea]. It is very easy to sit a little and hide behind the curtains.
To be fair to Phil Jones, I haven’t seen him come out and talk and explain, he may have had injuries we don’t know about. But if he’s fit and he stays sitting as he was, signs a new contract and stays and doesn’t go out on loan… that’s not what the footballer wants.
“There are players who are happy to just sit and club and not play and relax. Winston Bogard did it at Chelsea for three or four years. I signed a big deal and relaxed from Holland.
If I was on the team with someone like this, I wouldn’t talk to them. They are a waste of time, so why am I talking to you and giving you any energy, taking that away from my other teammates who are here to play and battle for 90 minutes every week.
