Resources for teaching and learning about Veterans Day
Veterans Day is this Thursday. If you find yourself looking for some quick lessons to review with your students, this is a small collection for you.
ReadWorks is one of my favorite places to go when I need vacation information text to share with students. ReadWorks has a good collection of Veterans Day articles sorted by grade level, along with a set of questions.
C-SPAN Classroom Resources
The C-SPAN classroom has sixteen “Bell Ringer” activities on World War I topics. One of them is titled Veterans Day History and Evolution. This activity includes a five-minute video with a short list of word terms and seven related questions. You can find C-SPAN classroom bell rangers and lesson plans for World War I on this resource page.
Bet you didn’t know.
Bet You Didn’t Know: Veterans Day is a video explaining why the start of the holiday and the date of its celebration changed twice in the United States. The end of the video includes an explanation of the difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day.
In terms of numbers, Veterans Day is also from history. As the name suggests, the video presents a statistical review of Veterans Day showing, among other interesting facts, what percentage of the American population has served in the military.
