Rebel against the classic New England ‘look’

There is a sculptural quality at 157 Whittier Road in Milton that will inspire you as you drive. There is limited attraction, but is there also curbing curiosity?

We thought so, and we weren’t disappointed. The 1974 Contemporary is a conservative shed-style style with bold ceiling lines and an asymmetrical shape that feels like a slight rebellion against the classic New England “look.” What we’re saying here is – it’s a very nice home that gets better once you get in, and even better when you think of the tree-lined acres it sits on.

Given the home’s stunning architectural style, the interior design carries a natural, dramatic feel that can be dressed up or kept simple. Flanked by a set of massive windows, a double front door floods the marble foyer with natural light. This is a recurring theme in the home, with floor-to-ceiling glass slides, huge picture windows, and glass walls bringing the outside inside, taking advantage of private grounds.

In addition to the formal dining and living rooms, the real star here is the family room off the kitchen. A double-height vaulted ceiling and two walls of glass capture the lush ambiance here, with access to a spacious deck and gourmet kitchen with breakfast bar and custom cabinets. Together, this part of the house is the perfect place for a family hangout.

At just under 5,000 square feet, the four-bedroom home has the elbow room families want while maintaining just the right proportions. The primary suite, naturally lit by the house’s trademark suite of windows, has a luxurious en suite bathroom through a set of pocket doors. Heat-radiating marble floors and a free-standing bathtub with a view of the trees, plus a custom counter make for a spa-like setting.

The property’s large, flat courtyard is surrounded by mature trees and provides plenty of space for outdoor living and entertainment.
