It’s understood Lingard has told team-mates he would love to join Newcastle and would not be put off by their league position in the bottom three of the Premier League.

West Ham have also shown a strong interest in Lingard who had a successful spell with the club in the second half of last season.

However, United have been reluctant to deal with a top-four rival, which has also frustrated Tottenham’s attempts to sign Lingard.

Everton have expressed an interest but could not sign two players on loan from United if they take Donny van de Beek for the rest of the season. Leicester and Burnley could be other options.

Lingard held talks with Rangnic at Carrington on Monday morning when United’s interim boss gave the player permission to spend the remaining six months of his contract at another club. He will leave as a free agent in the summer.

Lingard is desperate to play football again and reclaim a place in the England squad ahead of the World Cup, having made just two starts for United this season.

Rangnick has been willing to let United’s unhappy players leave in the January window with Anthony Martial joining Sevilla on loan and Van de Beek on the verge of a move to Everton. Lingard is now set to leave before the deadline, and there is an outside chance of goalkeeper Dean Henderson following.

Amad Diallo has also moved to Rangers to continue his development before he returns to United in the summer.
