Ursula von der Leyen said the EU should encourage countries to consider compulsory vaccination as part of a common approach to combating Covid and the Omicron variant.
The European Commission president’s comments come as Austria and Greece target unvaccinated people with sanctions, and the next German chancellor supports mandatory strikes.
Von der Leyen, a former physician, said the pandemic and the large numbers of unvaccinated people across Europe mean previously unimaginable policies, such as forced vaccinations, must be taken into account.
“Two or three years ago I would have never thought watching what we see now, this is horrible pandemicShe said. “We have vaccines, and Lifesaving Vaccines, but it is not used appropriately everywhere. This is a huge health cost.”
