aAt a time when politics is becoming more and more malevolent in many countries, the Germans have just shown how to manage the transfer of power. Angela Merkel has taken her successor Olaf Schulz to international summits to introduce him to his fellow world leaders, even though her party did not form part of his new government. Schulze negotiated the coalition much more quickly than expected. Ahead of the election, London assumed Merkel would remain chancellor at next month’s EU Council meeting, when relations with the UK are likely to be discussed. Its policy flyer is bold, too. Germany, it seems, is on alert again.
