Officer involved in Ocala shooting, no injuries – Published Reporter®

This case is currently under investigation by the Major Crimes Unit, and appropriate charges against these two individuals are imminent. Fortunately, no one was injured during this extremely tense situation.

OCALA, FL – On Thursday, September 16, around 4:30 p.m., Ocala police officers responded to a reported battery at Promenade Apartments, located at 1421 SW 27NS the way. While officers were at the site to investigate the altercation, witnesses indicated that one of the groups involved had left the compound saying they would return with firearms and shoot the notified parties.

Officers immediately began conducting surveillance inside the compound in an effort to arrest people if they returned to the area. Shortly thereafter, officers noticed a vehicle manned by four people entering the compound and heading to the south side of the property.

Witnesses then started running from that area, telling the officers that the car was in fact occupied by the people involved in the original melee and that they were now armed. When Ocala police officers approached for further investigation, two of the people fled on foot. The first subject was quickly apprehended within the compound by a patrol department, the Violent Crimes Unit and was arrested without further incidents.

The second person, Dallas Duttard, 23, was chased around the compound and refused to comply with repeated instructions to stop and show his hands. Eventually, during the foot chase, Duthard produced a revolver at the time that fired a patrol sergeant who was chasing a single shot from a revolver issued by his department. Dutthard missed the round. Duthard then gave up his gun and proceeded to flee on foot. The sergeant continued the pursuit and Duthard was captured a short distance from the shooting scene. He was then taken into custody without further incident.

Ocala Police Chief Mike Balkin stated, “It is important to note that our officers performed incredibly well during this entire incident and I could not be more proud of them. They responded quickly to a simple call to service, quickly recognized the potential for violence, and responded in a superb way to ensure the safety of Many bystanders inside the compound, many of them were young children. The bottom line here is that our officers certainly prevented what could have escalated into an active shooting situation inside the compound which could endanger the safety of many innocent people.Although an investigation is currently underway, My initial review of the situation leads me to believe that the sergeant who fired his weapon did well within the instructions, showing an incredible amount of restraint. We are very lucky that our sergeant was unharmed and quite frankly, Duthard is very lucky to be still alive. It is yet another example of the difficult and sometimes very dangerous task our employees do on a daily basis. It should serve as an example of the wonderful work they are doing there to ensure the safety of our community.”

At this time, we will not reveal the name of the sergeant involved in the shooting in order to give him and his family some privacy. As usual under these circumstances, he was given administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
