New Jersey mother Yuhui Zhou faces murder charges after children found dead in the back seat – CBS New York

Hillsboro, NJ (CBS New York) The New Jersey community is in shock After finding two dead children In the back seat of the car on Tuesday morning.

Their mother, Yuhui Zhou, is now facing murder charges. I underwent a mental evaluation and first appeared in court on Wednesday afternoon in Somerset County.

CBS2’s Lisa Rosner reported that the 36-year-old sometimes hit her head, only speaking when a judge asked her if she had a question for the attorney general, which she didn’t.

While police continue their investigation, neighbors told CBS2’s John Dias that they were overwhelmed by the tragic incident.

“I don’t know if there is any way you can remedy this. I feel very sad for their families,” said neighbor Helen Wang.

Somerset County prosecutors said 7-year-old Samantha Ross and her 10-month-old brother Paul Ross were found in the car near Mountain View Road in Hillsborough, about 10 miles north of the family’s home in Skillman, which is in the town of Montgomery. Chu was behind the wheel, the children were tied up and confined to their booster seats, showing no signs of life.

Robert Long’s son was driving a tow truck when he spotted the car just before 8 a.m. on Tuesday.

“He just said he found a lady in the ditch and said he asked her if she was okay. She said no, I think, and then he [saw] children. Then call the police immediately,” Long said.

Samantha Ross was a sophomore at Waldorf Princeton School. The principal told CBS2 that the school community was “shocked and deeply saddened” by her death. Grief counselors are on site to support students and staff.

Neighbors said the little girl, nicknamed “Sam,” was restless, adding that not hearing her play across the street would be a chilling reminder that she’s gone.

“It set up a small lemonade stand at one time, even though there are no cars going down our streets,” Wang said. “She’s so brave. She’s a little soul, and a wonderful, the cutest little thing, but, yes, just a little angel.”

Neighbors said they had seen officers at the family home before.

“Over the years, I’ve seen some. Police cars would occasionally come by. We never know what anything like that was going on,” Austin Wang Bailey said.

Helen Wang said that if she had known something was wrong and the children were in danger, she would have stepped in to help.

“I’ve never seen the little boy. I understand he was a beautiful little boy,” she said.

The children’s father, James Ross, is an engineer at Bloomberg’s New Jersey offices. CBS2 was unable to reach him for comment.

Zhou is scheduled to return to court next Tuesday.
