Auckland – A man who was carrying his infant son inside his home in West Auckland last week was hit in the face by a bullet fired from outside the house, authorities said.
The 5-week-old girl had some cuts, but investigators have not yet been able to definitively determine the cause.
The 49-year-old, who lives with his husband and their other child, a 4-year-old girl, remained in hospital on Tuesday.
The shooting was reported around 7:40 p.m. Saturday at the home near 10th and Peralta Streets in the city’s Prescott neighborhood.
Authorities said the man was holding the child and was looking out the window when at least 10 shots were fired toward the house and he was hit in the face.
His wife, their other child and another person in the house were unharmed. They have moved to another residence.
Police have not yet determined a motive for the shooting and have not released descriptions of possible suspects.
Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $7,500 in reward for information that leads to the arrest of the shooter or shooters. Anyone with information can contact the police at 510-238-3426 or Crime Stoppers at 510-777-8572.
According to a summary shared on GoFundMe Online Fundraising AccountThe victim is expected to undergo several surgeries, “surrounded by loved ones and doing his best under the circumstances.”
According to the publication, his husband “is now working on putting the parts of his life and family together. This amazing family is loved by so many, and the outpouring of support has been phenomenal.”
“The fund is initiated to help with all expenses to be incurred” as the family finds a new home, rents a car while the home they have is repaired, and pays for the children’s daycare and medical expenses for the wounded man once he is discharged from the hospital.
The family is hoping for answers as to why their home has been targeted, but for now “the focus is on stabilizing the whole family,” the post states.
As of Tuesday afternoon, $46,232 had been raised on the account toward its $50,000 goal.
