run for a fifth term, Laura M. Schaefer Well aware of area concerns from water quality to property tax assessment. Discuss goals and services without resorting to slogans.
Membership in the Republican majority gives Schaefer, 53, of Westbury, leverage to lobby for her area. Perhaps it can make headway with the industrial development authorities by removing the ambiguity surrounding the granting of tax credits. Its positions on improving funding and coordination for mental health programs, intercounty and township cooperation and fact-based police reform sound realistic.
But no one should lightly dismiss Democrat Robert T. McCarthy, 25, from Garden City. He actively campaigns and demonstrates authoritative, even out-of-the-box, positions on topics such as the need for new comprehensive traffic plans and suggests the 23-year-old’s cannabis sales age. McCarthy is now a law student, clearly showing the right things for public service — hopefully in the not too distant future.
Newsday endorses Schaefer.
