Keep redirects running for one year

Google’s Gary Ellis recommends keeping the redirect in place for at least a year so that ranking indicators are permanently approved.

Although Google has previously recommended keeping redirects running for a year or more, this is a common practice and does not directly affect ranking signals.

We now know that site owners can remove a redirect after one year, and Google will continue to forward signals indefinitely.

This is the first “solid” answer from Google on how long redirects need to stay in place to pass the signal permanently.

In the follow-up tweet, he refers to the Google Help document that called for a rationale behind the one-year time frame.

Keep redirects as long as possible, Usually at least 1 year. This timeframe allows Google to move all signals to new URLs, including redesigning and reassigning links to other sites that point to your old URLs.

In response to the initial tweet, Alice answered a number of questions where she clarifies – yes, when a signal is sent from one URL to another, it will remain the same forever.

It takes Google about a year to move all the signals forward, which is why the minimum recommended time frame for redirects to live is offered.

If possible, however, keep redirecting as long as you can because that’s better for the user experience.
