Kaitlin Conway goal lifts Sakim East girls’ soccer 6-1

Kaitlyn Conway received simple instructions when lining up for a free kick. And executed them to perfection.

“I wanted to shoot it as hard as I could and test the goalkeeper,” Conway said. “[Coach Tom] Anson was like, ‘Test the goalkeeper,’ so I said ‘OK’ and I hit her.”

Conway sent a 30-yard free kick into the upper far corner of the net with 20:44 left in the first half to give hosts Sachem East a 1-0 win over West Islip at Suffolk Division 1 girls’ soccer on Monday.

“I literally told her ‘Caitlin, this has to be on target, you need to test this guard,'” Anson said. “She hits the ball really well and puts it under the crossbar and winds behind her, ripping it off as hard as she can. She’s a great player and I’m so happy for her.”

This goal will be all Sachem East needs.

Avery Lynn has saved five wins behind the line including Michaela Parisi, Erika Urbancic, Ava Lovregen, Macayla Gray and Alexandra Gomez da Silva.

Sachem East, last season’s Suffolk Class AA champion, started the fall hard by scoring 6-1. Although this season’s team is younger after graduating from a strong senior class, the wins keep piling up. West Islip falls to 1-3-1.

“It’s a little different,” said striker Madison Abisella, of the Newsday lineup at Alle Long Island last season. “We are a young team so everyone had to get into the groove and get used to the way we play our game. I think it was a little difficult at first but we started to get there and I think we will start from there.”

Sakim East is using last season as a motivator and would like to return to the final. Sakim East played to a 1-1 draw with Ward Melville in last season’s final, and since there was no official tournament that year, the match did not go into penalty shootouts and both teams were co-champions.

“Everyone’s shooting for us,” Anson said. “Everyone is trying to give their best against the defending champion. When you play the defending champion, there’s always a little extra and that’s tough. That’s something we have to deal with, knowing the teams are looking for us.”

Sakim East enjoys the challenge. And even if this is not their best match, the players are confident that they will get the result they want.

“It wasn’t our best performance [today]But good teams always find a way to win and we made it work,” Conway said.
