Jurgen Klopp reviews Liverpool’s opening pre-season friendlies

Jurgen Klopp has declared his satisfaction after Liverpool began their pre-season program of friendlies with a 1-1 draw with Wacker Innsbruck and Stuttgart.

The Reds played two consecutive 30-minute games in Austria on Tuesday night, with Divock Origi – from the penalty spot – and Sadio Mane scoring the goals.

After the match, Klopp spoke to Liverpoolfc.com. Read on for the full version…

On his assessment of the two games…

It was a good workout. Physically it was all we wanted to see, we had to do it and it was an important test for that. From a football point of view, there is clearly a lot of room for improvement; I saw a lot of wild pressure. We wanted a lot of pressure, we had a little competition between the two teams to see who gets the ball back the most and how many counterpresses we have. We have to think about the prize that the team will win! Obviously the first game was a very young team, Innsbruck was doing well and obviously in a better moment than we are because they started next week with the league and we started last week with pre-season so it’s different. But the kids did well in all situations, losing a little organization here and there, that’s how it is. The second match was a tough test, and Stuttgart is a really good team. We started very well and then we conceded. Then we got into the game more and more and scored a really great goal. I’m really happy with that, everything is fine. I saw what I was expecting to see, actually – it would be weird to stand here and say, ‘Oh my God, I didn’t know we could play this kind of football’ but I’m fine with it and now we move on.

Players who occupy new positions in the games have to…

I don’t think Harvey has ever played that position for us, but he looked good. Taurus can see for the first few minutes right away that it is definitely an option. We’ll see how that continues. Ibo did really well and that’s what we expected, he looks really good in training. The first game with all the little boys, they’ve already shown up in training but it’s different when you play with a first team with all the kids together on the team. It’s hard, but no problem – life is tough and we have to give them the opportunity to test in this kind of game. We do that and now we continue.

On whether Virgil van Dijk or Joe Gomez can play on Friday against Mainz…

It will be a surprise for me too. They looked really good in training and yesterday was the first day they did very complicated things, usually either offensive or defensive and things like that. We should get there step by step, but I don’t expect it to be Friday.
