Judge stops Britney Spears’ father from custody of her life and money

Los Angeles (AFP) – A judge has suspended Britney Spears’ guardianship father who controlled the singer’s life and finances for 13 years.

Supreme Court Justice Brenda Penny agreed to a petition from Spears and her attorney, Matthew Rosengart, that James Spears needs to relinquish his role as trustee. The move is a huge victory for the singer, who pleaded at dramatic hearings in June and July that her father needed to come out.

James Spears sought guardianship in 2008 and was the main controller and biggest champion. He reversed course in recent weeks, asking the judge to end the guardianship.

Britney Spears and Rosengart agreed that the guardianship should be terminated and said in court documents that impeaching James Spears was a necessary first step.

Hours before the hearing, a main street outside the courthouse was closed to cars, allowing about 100 Spears supporters to demonstrate and host a rally where they shouted “Hey, hey, guardianship must go!” And other pro-Britney chants. As the crowd grew, fans sang Spears’ songs “Toxic” and “Baby One More Time,” and speakers described the abusive guards that affected their families.

“We’re making history now,” said Martino Odeh, 27, who traveled from Phoenix to be in the courtroom. “And the fact that we can change the life of a pop star, who has been stripped of her rights for 13 years, is an insane fact. It is phenomenal.”

Spears’ attorney, Matthew Rosengart, has been pressing hard for the ouster of her father, James Spears, moments ago after Penny allowed her to hire Rosengart in July. Penny denied Rosengart’s request for an emergency hearing on the case, and told the attorney she might wait until Wednesday.

And in a major reversal, James Spears, who first sought guardianship in 2008 and was its chief supervisor, petitioned to end it altogether.

Britney Spears and Rosengart said in a later filing that they agreed with her father that guardianship must end, the first time she has called for an arrangement to end in court documents.

However, they stressed that it was more important to her that her father be removed, calling it a necessary first step toward her freedom and “an end to Kafka’s nightmare being imposed on her”.

Rosengart said in another filing this week that James Spears “crossed unfathomable boundaries” by engaging in illegal surveillance of her, including communications with her attorney, as reported in the “Britney Spears Control” documentary from The New York Times and Network. FX, one of two dueling documentaries released on the eve of the hearing.

Britney Spears was too Engaged to her old boyfriend, Sam Asgari, earlier this month, meaning a prenuptial agreement was drawn up in which her father should not be involved, court filings said.

James Spears stepped down in 2019 as governor over his daughter’s person, keeping control of her life decisions, keeping only his role as guardian of her estate, while controlling her finances. He and his lawyers said many of his daughter’s complaints about his control over her life were meaningless.

James Spears denied acting in anything but his daughter’s best interest and rejected Rosengart’s demands to resign immediately. He said in court papers that he was not aware of “a single medical professional and not a single guardian investigator report” who concluded that his presence as guardian harmed his daughter or that he should be replaced.

The The province was established in 2008 When Britney Spears began to experience general mental struggles as hordes of paparazzi aggressively pursued her everywhere and lost custody of her children.
