Jonah Hill needed to ‘pause’ and change direction after his rapid rise to fame.

The 37-year-old actor, who became a household name worldwide after starring alongside Michael Cera in 2007’s Superbad, admitted that he found himself ‘running towards success’ rather than focusing on other areas of his life.

“I was really ahead on a professional level but I was really late personally,” Juna told director Adam McKay in an interview. GQ Magazine.

He continued, “Throughout my twenties, I wasn’t really looking inward. I was running towards success. Or trying to find success.

“And when I was 30, I was like, ‘I’ve always wanted to be a manager, but if I don’t get off that train now and write the mid-’90s, I won’t.

A pause occurred. It took three or four years to remake things.

“I was like, I could do this for another 10 years and I wouldn’t develop as a person.”

The War Dogs director’s debut was loosely based on his personal experience growing up in the ’90s skate culture. Jonah spent six years every day at the Hot Rod skate shop in Los Angeles.

He told McKay, “I’m not representative of skate culture. But the two most attractive environments are skateboarding and comedy, and I grew up in both environments.”

You were an insecure kid, overweight, which in both societies is like having a crimson on you. You are the target of abuse. But also in both of these societies are the smartest, most interesting, most damaged and most beautiful people, as we know.

He went on to explain, ‘That’s how I came of age, and that’s what I wanted to show in my first movie. I really wanted to make this movie that expresses the movies I want to make, movies that are really funny but also carry with them a deep human sadness.

He added: This is how I feel. I feel really funny and have a deep-rooted human sadness, as we all do. I don’t want to ignore either of them. And so I got there.

Juna admitted that a large part of him struggling to adjust to his new life was because he came “overnight” when he was in his early twenties.

He added: ‘It was very overnight for me. Michael Cera and I talk about it all the time. We just had this truly rare experience: life was once one way, then one day life was different.

‘I was a child. Maybe I had too much strength for the young man, too much independence, and not enough life skills.

However, the star has now admitted that he understands why people are “going to college”, while previously he was seen as “unemployed”. Juna attended New School in New York City and University College in Boulder but did not graduate.

He said, ‘I dropped out of college, and I didn’t understand why people would go to college. Because if you’re ambitious, why spend four years idle?

And then it wasn’t until I was 30 that I realized that what those four years had given all my friends was that fluctuating period of how to be a person.

During the interview, Adam asked Jonah about the potential toxic effect of social media. Jonah said, ‘I have a real theory on this, if you want to hear it. It might be too real for people, dude. OK?’

Hill went on to say, “Okay, Instagram. Instagram – and I smoke a cigarette – is the cigarette at this time. It’s the biggest killer.”

He continued, “It is death.” I participate fully in it, as I smoke cigarettes. Again, it’s a range of what you find healthy. I should have really limited interaction with her. “
