HP Chromebook x2 11 Overview: A Tough Value Suggestion

When HP unveiled the Chromebook x2 11, there was a lot of excitement in the Chrome OS community. It’s been a while since we’ve seen a Chrome tablet with a high resolution display, premium build, and usable aspect ratio. Of course, there were still a lot of questions about insiders. The HP Chromebook x2 runs a Snapdragon 7c chip inside, which was less impressive in my review of the Acer Chromebook Spin 513. Still, I had some hope that maybe HP could eliminate some software optimization to improve the overall performance on this beautiful. Tablet So, Can You Buy The Best Chrome OS Tablet? The answer is a bit complicated and depends on when and where you buy it.

One of the hardest tips to review the HP Chromebook x2 11 is the price. While the MSRP from HP sits at $ 599 for the 8GB / 64GB variant, Best Buy has often reduced this model to $ 399 on its website. Some models also have some weird choices about whether or not to include the USI pen. Both of these things change the value of the offer throughout the lineup. Throughout this review, I will provide some insights into where every aspect of the device fits into this value spectrum. Regardless, this is definitely the best HP Chrome tablet you can find. This is our HP Chromebook x2 11 review.

About this review: I got an 8GB / 64GB model from HP for review. I’ve been using it as my basic Chromebook for over two weeks now. During this trial period, I used it as my primary tool for writing articles for my YouTube channel, drafting lecture notes, and doing light video editing.

Construction and design

The construction and overall design of the HP Chromebook x2 11 is definitely one of its charming aspects. If you asked me six months ago, I would tell you that the original Chromebook Duet is the best Chrome tablet you can buy. The build on this particular device was nothing but a premium. Now, if you’re looking for a Chrome tablet, the HP has a beautifully crafted option with a solid aluminum frame that looks and feels durable. Granted, it’s not a revolutionary design in any way, but in a space hungry for attractive bullets, it’s above competition.

HP X2 11 back

The bezels on the tablet are thin enough to make the front of the display pleasing to the eye. On the back is a matte silver, which makes the tablet easier to grip when you are using it as a media consumption or gaming device. The standalone cover is also a nice blue / telephoto color, which is actually something you can choose when buying a tablet. Also, the magnets on this stand are incredibly strong. If you need a study stand to watch movies or you have to turn up the tablet while writing a few notes, it will work without any problem.

HP X2 11 camera

In terms of durability, the tablet feels strong and doesn’t have a ton of flakes. I didn’t drop the device while reviewing it, but I would imagine that it could avoid a small fall on different levels. The placement of the power button is not my favorite at all as it is slightly higher when used in portrait mode. I would imagine that most people could use it more in landscaping, but I use my tablet a bit for notes, so it was a concern during my use. The tablet also lacks a headphone jack, which isn’t a big deal for everyone, but it’s worth mentioning. Also, I had no major complaints when it comes to build quality or overall layout on this tablet. HP did a solid job in providing a more premium built-in option in the Chrome OS tablet category.

Keyboard and touchpad

I don’t expect much from the keyboard and touchpad when it comes to such a Chrome OS convertible device. This is mainly because you are guaranteed that these ingredients will have some softening for them, not ideal for productivity. The good news is that the HP Chromebook x2 11 keyboard is generally better than most Chrome OS detachable keyboards, including the popular Lenovo Chromebook Duet.

HP X2 11 keyboard

While it’s definitely not the best keyboard ever, the HP Chromebook x2 11’s keyboard attachment is less tight than most detachable keyboards. Key travel is also decent, and it’s not entirely uncomfortable to hammer long emails or short blog posts using this device while sitting at a desk. There is definitely something to be said for the fact that you can keep the keyboard connected to the device when it is turned off. That’s the decent thing to do, and it should end there. In fact, it protects the display on the front of your tablet when you take it with you, a definite advantage.

HP X2 11 Stand

That being said, the relative weakness of its keyboard causes a lot of problems when you use it on your lap. Prolonged use like this is frustrating, especially since just placing your palm on the keyboard can cause incorrect mouse clicks in that direction. This is not something that is really easy to fix. By their very nature, detachable keyboards need to be relatively thin, which means tin flakes that cause such instability concerns. If you want a Chromebook you can use on your lap and enjoy the experience, this is definitely not for you.

Display and pen support

The display on the HP Chromebook x2 11 is, without a doubt, the most impressive feature. You get an 11-inch 2160 x 1440 IPS panel, which is very workable 3 Makes for 2 aspect ratio, if you want to use it for actual work. The brightness is solid enough at 400 nits, so you can work outdoors, or play some Netflix in the sun. Viewing angles are generally excellent, and all forms of media with clear colors and deep blacks make this display a perfect jump. If you’re looking for a tablet that primarily uses media, this is where the HP Chromebook x2 11 really shines.

HP X2 11 front view

Of course, if you are going to use a lot of media, you will need the best speaker. HP has covered you there too. The B&O branded speakers are on the front and are loud and clear enough to enjoy streaming media and games without the need for headphones.

When I received the HP Chromebook x2 11, I was incredibly excited to test the included USI pen. I’ve already taken a brief look at Google’s new Cresio PWA for Chromebooks, but the Chromebook x2 11 was improved to work with the app. It is worth noting that only certain models of tablets include the USI pen at no extra cost. For models sold directly from HP, you may not get the USI pen, in which case it costs $ 60 to purchase it separately.

HP X2 11 tablet mode

I am happy to say that the experience of using Cresio with HP USI pen on this tablet is the best. In general, I had a few less false touches as I rested my wrist on the display. This is something I experience a little while testing the chair on my ASUS Chromebook CX9 and Galaxy Chromebook 2. Looks like HP is working with Google on the magic of some software, or I can make my wrist a little different on this small screen. Either way, this tablet makes a great writing companion and if you take a lot of notes you will enjoy it for that purpose.

Performance and battery life

It brings us to performance. My experience with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7c was less than ideal when I reviewed the Acer Chromebook Spin 513. Unfortunately, the same can be said for the 7c inside the HP Chromebook x2 11. Not only that, there are similar hiccups in normal UI navigation, and Android apps have significantly more annoying issues due to the nature of the tablet interface. An important example is the rotation from portrait to landscape, which is incredibly slow and slow on this tablet. It’s almost instantaneous if you move the iPad from portrait to landscape. This is definitely not the case with the HP Chromebook x2 11 and can be frustrating at times.

HP X2 11 side shot

If you need to do serious work or do any kind of multi-tasking, this is not the best device at this price. Even at a sale price of $ 399, you can find a better Chromebook with productivity functions and better overall performance. Gaming is another application where I would not recommend the HP Chromebook x2 11. With Android games, you won’t be able to play anything on the maximum settings and still not enjoy the gameplay.

HP X2 11 cover off

Battery life as a whole is quite solid, especially for the media consumption tasks that the Chromebook x2 11 leads. I managed to squeeze in about 8 hours while browsing social media, watching YouTube / Netflix, and typing some short articles for XDA. You may not be able to extend HP’s recommended 11-hour battery life, but I think 8 hours is a solid amount for a media tablet. If you use it in direct sunlight or crank up to maximum brightness indoors, you can bank for about 6 hours on a single charge.

Corollary: Should you buy it?

It’s hard to say whether the HP Chromebook x2 11 is a good price, because it depends on how much you buy it. At a selling price of $ 399, which we recently saw at Best Buy, it’s a solid media user device with a beautiful display, solid battery life and a good speaker. On the other hand, for HP’s recommended MSRP of 599, I would expect a bit more from this device. Given that you can’t work on it or play interesting games, I won’t pay $ 599 for this tablet. There are many other great Chromebooks at this price point, while not all of them are tablets, 2-in-1 offers are enough.

If you’re looking for my recommendation for a workhorse Chromebook for $ 599, I’d recommend the Acer Chromebook Spin 713. This Chromebook has 2-in-1 capability, a beautiful screen, and enough processing power to do more than an HP Chromebook. x2 11. For those of you who just need a media tablet or note-taking device that isn’t your core device, get the HP Chromebook x2 11 on sale and you’ll love it.
