How to use accounting number format in Microsoft Excel.

If you use Microsoft Excel for accounting purposes, you may want to use the accounting number format for your numbers. There are several ways to implement this formatting, and we’ll show you how.

What is the format of accounting number?

At first glance, the accounting number format looks like a currency. However, there are some differences between the two.

The differences are:

  • Currency mark: The accounting number format places the currency symbol on the far left of the cell.
  • Zero as a dash: Your zeros are displayed as dashes in this number format.
  • Negative in parentheses: Are displayed in negative numbers. () (Brackets) Excel does not do this by default.

All of the methods below allow you to apply the same accounting number format to your numbers, so use whichever method you find easier.

Apply the accounting number format with the ribbon option.

There is an option in Excel’s ribbon to help you quickly use the accounting number format in your spreadsheets.

To use it, first open your spreadsheet with Microsoft Excel. In your spreadsheet, select the cells containing the numbers you want to convert into accounting numbers.

Select the number in the Excel spreadsheet.

In the Excel ribbon at the top, click on the “Home” tab.

Click on "Home" Tabs in Excel.

On the “Home” tab, in the “Numbers” section, click the down arrow icon next to the “Accounting Number Format” option.

In the menu that opens, select the currency for your numbers.

Choose a currency.

And the numbers you selected now use the accounting number format.

Apply the accounting number format with the drop-down menu.

Another way to implement the accounting number format is to use the number formatting drop-down menu.

To use this method, open your spreadsheet with Microsoft Excel. Then select the cells with the numbers in them.

Select the number in the Excel spreadsheet.

In the Excel ribbon at the top, click on the “Home” tab.

Click on "Home" Tabs in Excel.

On the “Home” tab, in the “Numbers” section, click the drop-down menu.

Click on the drop-down menu. "No." Section

From the drop-down menu, select “Accounting”.

Select. "Calculation" From the drop down menu.

And all your selected numbers are now in accounting number format.

Use the accounting number with the Format Cell window.

The third way to use the accounting number format in Excel is to open the Format Sales window.

To do this, open your spreadsheet and select the numbered cells in it. Right-click on one of these cells and select “Format Cells” from the menu.

Right-click and select Number Sales. "Format sales."

A “Format Sales” window will open. Here, from the “Category” list on the left, select “Accounting”.

In the pane on the right, specify decimal points for your numbers using the “Decimal Locations” option. Then, select a currency from the “Logo” drop-down menu.

Finally, click “OK” at the bottom of the window.

Configure the accounting number format.

The cells you selected are now formatted in accounting number format.

The accounting number format applies to selected sales.

You are now ready for your accounting tasks in your Excel spreadsheets.
