In Windows 11, you can set Internet data limits so that your computer does not use more than the permitted data. We’ll show you how to define different data boundaries on a Windows 11 PC.
You’ll want to use this feature if you’re on a trained mobile connection, or if your Internet plan offers limited data. With this method, you will know when you are about to reach your permitted data limit.
Set data cap in Windows 11.
In Windows 11, you can set the data cap individually for each Wi-Fi network. You can also set an Ethernet connection limit. To get started, launch the Settings app on your computer. To hurry, press Windows + i.
On the Settings screen, select “Network and Internet” in the left sidebar.
Scroll down to the “Network and Internet” screen and select “Advanced Network Settings.”
On the “Advanced Network Settings” page under the “More settings” section, select “Data usage”.
You are now on the “Data Usage” screen. Here, in the top right corner, click the “Wi-Fi” drop-down menu and select the network for which you want to set data limits.
Then, under the “Wi-Fi” drop-down menu, click the “Enter Limit” button.
A “Set Data Limit” popup will open. In the “Limit type” section, select the type of data type you want to apply to your connection.
The options offered are:
- Monthly: It resets your data cap every month.
- Once: This is a one-time data cap that expires after a certain number of days.
- Unlimited: It does not impose any restrictions on the use of your data but rearranges the data usage statistics on a specific date of the month. It is useful to know how much data you use within a given time frame.
If you select Monthly, click the “Monthly Reset Date” drop-down menu and select the date when your data cap ends. Click the “Data Limit” box and type the allowed amount of data. Click “Unit” and select a unit for your data.
Then, at the bottom of the popup, click “Save.”
If you go to the One Time option, click on the “Days of Data Erasure” drop-down menu and select the number of days after which your data is lost. Click the “Data Limit” box and enter the amount of data allowed. Select the data unit from the “Units” drop-down menu.
Then, at the bottom of the popup, click “Save”.
If you choose Unlimited, click the “Monthly Reset Date” drop-down menu and select a date on which your data cap ends.
Then, click “Save” at the bottom of the popup.
And set data limits in Windows 11.
As you approach your data limit, your computer will send you an alert. You can then either continue using the Internet or stop using it.
Remove the data cap in Windows 11.
To remove data restrictions from your computer, you can remove the data cap. To do this, open Windows Settings and go to Network & Internet> Advanced Network Settings> Data usage on your computer.
On the “Use Data” screen, in the top right corner, click “Remove Limit”.
In the “Remove Data Limit” prompt that opens, click “Remove”.
Your data limit has now been removed.
Reset data usage statistics in Windows 11.
Data usage statistics tell you how much data you’ve used. To resume usage calculations, you can reset this counter.
To do this, open Settings and go to Network & Internet> Advanced Network Settings> Data usage on your computer.
Scroll all the way down the “Use Data” screen. Then, next to “Reset Usage Statistics”, click “Reset”.
In the “Reset Usage Statistics” prompt that opens, select “Reset” to confirm your choice.
And Windows 11 will rearrange the counter to use your data.
If you are on a limited internet data plan, there are several things you can do to use less data on your devices. Streaming services usually consume the most data, but there are ways these services can use less of your data.
