In August 2020, Google decided to add a tab to Gmail for its Met video conferencing platform. No big deal for the desktop version – although you can choose to get rid of it if you don’t intend to use the mat at all – but it can be a real problem for the mobile app. Because it increased the bottom margin of the app and gave you about three short lines to work with. So we’ve provided instructions on how to get rid of the Mate tab on your phone.
Google has now added the ability to access your chat and room features directly from Gmail. As a result, many people are realizing that tabs are back under their mobile screens, taking up valuable space once again.
You can get rid of new tabs just like you got rid of the “Mate” tab. If you do not remember how, or if you are experiencing this problem for the first time, here is how to deal with it. These guidelines apply to the Gmail app on both Android and iOS. (Note: Your instructions may vary slightly depending on your Android phone.)
- Select the three-line “hamburger” icon in the upper left corner, scroll down and tap “Settings”.
- Select the Gmail account you want to change.
- On the iPhone, toggle “Show chats and rooms” near the top of the page. On Android phones, scroll down to the “Chat” category and uncheck the “Show chat and rooms tab.”
And that’s it! You’ve regained some space on your Gmail app. Incidentally, if you want to show all tabs for chat, rooms and mats, just go back to the same settings page and check both “Show chat and rooms tab” and “Show mats” (or toggle on) Tab boxes for video calling. All three tabs will appear in a single line at the bottom of the screen.
