What is a watermark?

Before learning the lesson, it is important to understand what a watermark is and what it does.

A watermark is like a stamp that you put on your art, designs or pictures to show that they belong to you. It also protects your work from theft or forgery.

Your watermark can be your logo, a plain text or even your signature. And you can use your watermark when sharing your designs and photos on social media. This prevents people from re-sharing or using your content without credit.

Tips for making effective watermarks

There are good watermarks then bad watermarks. Here are some tips to help you improve your watermark.

Use the appropriate size

When watermarking an image or design, it is important to know the correct size to use for the watermark.

It is a very unprofessional habit to cover your whole image with a huge watermark. But even using a small watermark will not help. Use a size that makes it difficult to get rid of thieves. But it’s also one that doesn’t pay attention to your art.

Include contact information

Watermarks used in art usually consist of signatures, sometimes with a date. But, when you watermark your digital designs or photography, especially for sharing on social media, you should use it as an opportunity to promote yourself.

Many designers and photographers now include their contact information with watermarks, such as their Twitter handles, emails, or phone numbers.

Add a copyright symbol

Although it is not necessary for every type of art, adding a copyright symbol to your watermark will ensure that your art is well protected. The copyright symbol consolidates your art as an intellectual property and states that art should not be used without permission.

Save as template

Remember to save your watermark as a template and backup. Make it as easy as possible to use watermarks, especially when processing multiple files.

How to create a watermark in Photoshop?

Here are some ways to create a watermark in Photoshop. We will start with the easiest way first.

Method 1: Use the logo template

The fastest way to create a watermark is to use your existing logo. If you don’t have a logo yet, you can download a pre-made logo template from the market, such as Envato Element.

Once you have the logo template, open it in Photoshop, select the transparent logo, and copy-paste it into your artwork. Set the watermark layer opacity to about 40 to blend in with the image.

Method 2: Add a text watermark

You can also create watermarks from text and it’s very easy. But, instead of just adding a layer of text, we’ll add a little style to it.

Start by drawing a small strip-like shape using the Rectangle tool. Slightly angle the edge of the shape to give it some shape. You can do this by pressing the control or command key on the keyboard.

Finally, in the Layers panel, select all the layers you have created, right-click and merge the layers. This will combine all the layers you have created into a single layer.

You will not be able to edit the text after merging the layers, so back up your file as a PSD before merging the layers.
