How to count characters in Microsoft Excel.

Unlike Word where you can easily get the character count of a document using a tool in the menu bar, if you want to get a character count in Excel you will need to use the LEN function. Here’s how to use it.

How to get single cell character count.

You can use the LEN function to quickly count the number of characters in a cell in two different ways.

To use the LEN function to get the character count, click on the cell in which you want to place the character count. Then, type. =LEN(cell) , Where Sale Is the actual cell that you want to get the character count from. So if you want to get the character count of cell A1, you will enter:

=LEN(A1)

Enter the LEN function in the cell.

Click on another cell and the character count will appear.

Or, you can easily copy the contents of the cell you want to get the character count, paste it into the formula instead of the reference cell, and wrap it in quotation marks. For example:

=LEN("How many characters are in this cell?")

Paste the cell contents into the formula.

It will return the same result.

If you are parsing the data, you can also split your text into several columns.

How to get the character count of more than one cell.

The LEN function can also be used in conjunction with the SUM function to get the character count of multiple cells. First, click on the cell in which you want to place the word count. Next, enter this formula:

=SUM(LEN(A1),LEN(A2))

Replace cell numbers with yours.

Enter the combination of LEN and SUM functions.

Click on another cell and the character count will return.

You can add as many cells as you want to the formula.

It is also easy to combine text from these different cells.

How to get specific character count in cell.

You can also use the LEN function to see how many times a particular character appears in a cell. Select the cell in which you want to return the count and then enter the formula:

=LEN(A1)-LEN(SUBSTITUTE(A1,"a",""))

Change cell ( A1 ) With your reference cell and a With the character you want to count. In our case, how many times are we searching? a Appears in cell A1.
