If you’re a frequent Reddit user, you’ve probably seen others use formatting options on their posts. Text formatting is here to match your Reddit experience.
Reddit text formatting.
Reddit is the largest discussion board on the Internet, with millions of active users and thousands of subscribers. Reddit only allows you to use the body in posts and comments. However, they have various options that will enable you to add formatting to your content through markdown, a markup language that applies text formatting to the content on a web page.
Compared to other text formatting languages, MarkDown is known for being straightforward, easy to use, and intuitive, even for new users. If you are interested in learning more about the language, you can check out our guide to markdown. However, this piece will focus on the formatting options that most Reddit users will find most useful.
If you’re using Reddit’s new interface on the desktop, you won’t need to use markdown because the interface has a visual editor. However, if you’re using the old Reddit, the official Reddit app on mobile, or third-party Reddit clients, you’ll still need to use MarkDown.

Basic formatting options.
Here are some basic formatting options that everyone can use for their posts.
*italics* – Slanted
**bold** – Bold
***bold italics*** – Bold slant
The formatting options above are ways to emphasize certain parts of the text. You can wrap an asterisk.
Tilting one block of text, placing two (**), and three (***) text to make the text bold, both bold and Italian. You can also add a line through the text with a strike throw using two tiles (~~) before and after.
# Header 1
## Header 2
### Header 3
Section and header
The actual font size of these header sections varies from browser to browser. Their purpose is to separate the different parts of the Reddit text post. This is especially true if the text post is long and concise, such as a guide or timeline. Like other documents, the largest size is header 1, followed by 2 and 3.
[Reddit Link](http://reddit.com) Inline links and automatic links.
u/nameofuser – Reddit link.
r/nameofsubreddit – u / reddit
– r / AskReddit[ ]To create a link on Reddit, wrap the link text in brackets (
), Then put the link in parentheses immediately after. These links should contain “http,” “https,” or similar link schemes.
You can also make Reddit automatically create links specific to you. After typing “u /” a Reddit username will be associated with that username. On the other hand, after “r /” the name of the subdivision will be associated with this community. Both cases are sensitive, so always make sure to type them in lowercase.
> Quoted Text
>> Nested Quote Text
References and code.
To refer to text from another user or other source, place a sign greater than one mark or angle bracket (>) before the text. To add a home quote within this quote, use two angle brackets (>>) before the text. To convert text to code, place a back tick (`) at the beginning and end of the text.
Line breaks and lines.
Single line brakes are made up of four spaces (), while double line brakes, or paragraph breaks, are two spaces, which you get by pressing the Enter key twice.
If you use three stars, you will also find a horizontal line, also called a line divider, which looks like this:
* Item 1
* Item 2
1. Numbered Item 1
2. Numbered Item 2
- Item number 1.
Item number 2.
To create a random list, add stars.
, Plus signs (+), or minus signs (-) before each item. Then add a line interval between each item. For numbered lists, place a number and a period (1., 2., etc.) before each item. It will number these items starting with one. You can’t create non-growing lists, so all lists will be formatted automatically to start from the top.
Reddit Preview Reddit Post.
Reddit Preview. If you want to make sure that it is good to go before posting your text, you can try using the Markdown Preview Editor. Some of these examples are Markdown Live Preview, Reddit Preview, and Stack Edit. If you’re using an older version of Reddit on the desktop, you can try using the Reddit Enhancement Suite, a browser extension that comes with a built-in markdown preview box, among other features.
