Kotb published the news with viewers on Monday on the “Today with Hoda and Gina” program, saying that the two reached the conclusion together after many conversations.
“Joel and I had a lot of meaningful conversation and prayer during the holidays and decided we were better friends and parents than an engaged couple, so we decided we would start this new year down the road as loving parents of our wonderful, wonderful children, and as friends.”
She added that the two, who were supposed to marry in 2020 but were postponed due to the pandemic, were ending on amicable terms.
“It’s not like something happened,” she explained. “They say sometimes relationships are supposed to be there for a reason or for a season or for life. And I feel like our relationships were supposed to be there for a season.”
Kotb added that she did not want to pretend and only wanted to tell the truth.
“A lot of women know what this is like, to change the course of life, and I feel really brave in this moment, and it’s such a strange feeling to feel,” she said. “But sometimes in your life, you just have to tell the truth.”
And she continued, “You can carry it and pretend…Ask yourself, am I just an optimist?” And sometimes you realize that optimism is like trying to circle a square, sometimes it just doesn’t work, and that’s okay. To be able to admit it. I feel better saying that. “
Her colleague, Bush Hager, called her “courageous” for sharing the news.
“There is nothing that comforts your soul more than speaking the truth,” Qutb said.
Kotb said she and Shiffman would continue to raise their children together, calling him a “great man” with whom she shares fond memories.
“He’s a great guy,” she said. “He’s a very kind and loving person, and I feel proud to have spent eight years with him.” “We are both good and we both go our way and our way. We will be good parents to these two lovely children.”
