Heart attack: Energy drinks can cause sudden cardiac arrest

Heart attack, characterized by cold sweats and sharp chest pain, is widely understood to be the result of poor lifestyle choices that progressively harm vascular health. The most well-known beverage associated with this damage is alcohol. But in recent years, other drinks have raised concerns about their effect on the heart. A popular beverage has been shown to increase the risk of heart attacks in young and healthy adults.

Heart attacks strike when blood flow to the heart is obstructed, and a number of factors can cause this.

A body of research has suggested that drinking too many energy drinks can lead to sudden cardiac arrest in otherwise healthy people.

The main dangers of the drink lie in its high concentrations of caffeine.

It contains masked caffeine in the form of agents like guarana, which is derived from a plant identical to the caffeine in coffee.

Although caffeine consumption is generally considered safe, adverse effects associated with larger doses have been reported.

However, guarana contains twice as much caffeine as coffee beans. The researchers cautioned that when mixed with other common substances, such as ginseng and taurine, guarana can generate uncertain interactions.

The authors of the 2017 research paper, published in the Anatolian Journal of Cardiology, noted the prevalence of “unexplained cardiac arrest in young adults after consuming energy drinks.”

They noted that the events were particularly prevalent among those who mixed energy drinks with alcoholic beverages.

They explained: “It seems clear that energy drinks, some beverages, and some supplements containing stimulants may lead to serious and, rarely, irreversible cardiovascular disease in young people.”

They speculated that the most credible explanation was that energy drinks “lead to catastrophic events through fatal arrhythmias.”

Arrhythmia is a condition caused by a defect in the signals that coordinate the heartbeat.

This can cause the heart to beat too fast, too slow, or too regularly. In severe cases, the condition can cause fast, chaotic electrical signals that travel to the heart’s lower chambers.

According to the Mayo Clinic, this can lead to serious problems that can cause death, if the heart rhythm is not restored within minutes.

How to avoid a heart attack

Anti-heart attack measures usually include treatment of high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

Conditions, which are major risk factors for a heart attack, can be avoided by combining exercise and a healthy diet.

WebMD recommends choosing “plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, poultry, fish and other lean protein, nuts, seeds, and vegetable oils.”

She also recommends “keeping saturated fats below six percent of your daily calories.”

Alcohol and tobacco also have important effects on cardiovascular risk factors, but smoking is certainly worse than drinking.

Inhaling cigarette smoke injures cells, causing severe damage to the artery, thus increasing the risk of heart attack.
