Government war rhetoric not ‘useful or wise’

Shadow Defense Minister Brendan O’Connor says the government has much to explain in terms of its words about the possible war with China.

This follows an address to the National Press Club by Secretary of Defense Peter Dutton.

“I do not think the Minister in any way explained why he suggested that it was inconceivable that we would not have a war with a superpower, China, if there was an invasion of Taiwan,” Mr O’Connor told Sky News Australia.

“I do not think that using war rhetoric for political purposes has been useful, has been useful and in any way wise.

“I expect the Prime Minister to rein him in.”
