Extreme Coupons Sent to Jail in $31.8 Million Fraud Scheme – WSVN 7News | Miami news, weather, sports

Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) – The FBI is revealing new details about a fake $31.8 million coupon scheme that led to a Virginia Beach couple imprisoned for nearly 20 years, combined.

in a press release The agency said last week that investigators found fake coupons in “every crevice” of the home owned by Lori Ann Tallins and her husband, Pacifico Tallins, Jr.. The fraudulent savings amounted to more than $1 million. They also found coupon designs for over 13,000 products on Lori Ann Talens’ computer.

“She trained herself in the various techniques she needed to manipulate barcodes to make these coupons work,” Special Agent Shannon Brill said in the FBI statement. Tallins, which is the mastermind of the scheme, will create fake coupons with discounts that are “approximate or greater than” the retail value of the item.

Talens did not use fraudulent coupons for itself. The FBI said she sold it to subscribers who found it on social media and communicated with them using an encrypted messaging app. The agency said Talens had paid more than $400,000 in cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin and sometimes “coupons exchanged for rolls stolen from private paper stores used to print coupons.”

The scheme was discovered for three years by the Coupon Information Corporation, which received advice that someone was making and mailing fraudulent coupons. One manufacturer’s group said it lost $125,000 on counterfeit coupons linked to Talens.

In September, Tallins was sentenced to 12 years in prison for “committing a counterfeit coupon fraud scheme” that cost retailers and manufacturers $32 million, according to the Department of Justice. Her husband was sentenced to 7 years in prison because he was aware of the scheme and profited from it.

The couple were accused of using the money for high-end home renovations, including building a new pool and remodeling their kitchen. Talens said in A statement obtained by the New York Times She was “extremely ashamed and embarrassed” by her actions.
