Elvis death: Mindy Miller’s touching farewell to the casket ‘The King was more handsome than ever’ | music | entertainment
Elvis Presley He died on August 16, 1977 of a heart attack in the toilet at the age of 42. King was found on the floor of his Graceland bathroom upstairs by his latest girlfriend Ginger Alden. As the tragic news spread, friends and family found out and headed to Memphis for the impending funeral.
Among them, Elvis’ ex-girlfriend was Mindy Miller, whom he dated for a period between 1975-6.
The King’s private plane, Lisa Marie, was assigned to carry family and friends based in Los Angeles, but it was full, so Memphis mafia member Joe Esposito arranged for her a seat on an American Airlines flight.
Mindy spoke with Elvis expert Billy Stallings Spa Guy, how one of King’s inner circle picked her up on landing before being flown to Graceland on the eve of his death.
The 71-year-old said, “I will never forget what the streets looked like. It was just hordes of people deep inside, you couldn’t even see the street. Everywhere I looked, they were just human masses.”
Inside the Graceland gates, many cars of friends and family were parked outside.
Mindy recalled, “We went to the front of the house and it was just a group of people…and yet it was very quiet. That night I brought Elvis’s body back home.”
After spending a night in a hotel, on the morning of August 17, Mindy returned to Graceland where everyone had the opportunity to spend their own time watching Elvis’ body in private.
The king’s casket was kept in the music room, where the curtains were drawn to give everyone a quiet moment to say goodbye.
Mindy continued, “I told him I loved him and missed him and had a private conversation with him. I said I’d be back as many times as I could over the next couple of days to see you.”
Elvis’ hands were covered in the casket so she wasn’t able to hold one of them, but she found another way to say goodbye.
She said, “I put my hand on his right arm and then I fell on my knees and kissed his forehead. Then I said goodbye and that I will see him later in the day.”
After going back and forth a few times to watch him that day, Mindy went out to dinner the night before the funeral with everyone as they shared stories of Elvis and their love for the King.
