The show followed the life of the Crowley family, who owned a sprawling estate in the English countryside in the early 1900s, and their servants.

Despite filming some scenes in different studios and locations, the cast and crew spend most of their time at Highclere Castle – which is Home of the 8th Earl and Countess of Carnavarone, whose family has lived there since 1679.

The cast reunited in Downton Abbey in 2019, which continued the story where the series left off.

The film sees beloved characters Robert (Hugh) and Cora Crowley (Elizabeth McGovern) told that they will be visited by the King and Queen and that the estate should prepare for the royal visit.

However, the family has to deal with a number of setbacks and problems along the way including an attempted assassination of a suspect.

The film was a surprising success at the box office, grossing $96.8 million domestically and $237.8 million worldwide, from a budget of just $13 million.

The actor told Zoe that he had seen a script for the film and added: “The planets are spinning. They are starting to get along.

There’s something called the coronavirus going around and until it’s reasonably controlled, we won’t be able to get all those ducks in a row.

He added: ‘But there is certainly an intention to do so. We would like to do that. We desperately need to do this.

Hugh also said he thinks audiences will enjoy another Downton movie after “the mess we were through” last year.
