‘Devastated’: WHO scientist condemns Euro 2020 final | Corona Virus
A scientist at the World Health Organization said that watching crowds exposed singing and screaming in Euro 2020 Sunday’s football final in London was “devastating”, and he expressed fears it could spur transmission of Covid-19, including the Delta version.
Covid-19 infections have surged in England, spurred by a highly contagious delta type and the lifting of restrictions, even as vaccination rates have continued. On July 19, nearly all remaining restrictions, including mask-wearing and social distancing mandates, are due to be lifted.
In the final stages of the match against Italy, Maria van Kerkhove, WHO’s technical lead for COVID-19, tweeted: “Am I supposed to enjoy watching the broadcast happen before my eyes?”
#COVID19 The pandemic is not taking a rest tonight… #SARSCoV2 #DeltaVariant will take advantage of people who are unvaccinated, in crowded places, exposed, screaming/screaming/singing. dire.”
