Declared the largest national park in Australia in the far north of southern Australia

It has been officially declared Australia’s largest national park, edging out previous title-holder Kakadu by more than one million hectares.

Munga-Thirri— Simpson Desert National Park in southern Australia’s far north reaches the borders of Queensland and the Northern Territories.

The new park is more than half the size of Tasmania, or nearly three times the size of Greater Sydney.

“It is truly exciting that South Australia is now home to Australia’s largest national park…this provides a major boost to conservation,” South Australia’s Environment Minister, David Spears, said in a statement.

The Wildlife Society described the ad as a “major initiative”.

Munga-Thirri— Simpson Desert National Park was created by combining a regional reserve and an existing conservation park.

There are special protections at Kallakoopah Creek, an ecologically important waterway in the park that is now considered a wilderness area.

The state government has also announced a new national park in the southern Flinders Ranges, combining several existing conservation parks in the Wirrabara and Mount Remarkable area.

Wapma Thura – Southern Flinders Ranges National Park is named in association with the term Nukuno referring to “snake people”, signifying the importance of the totem.

Two other conservation parks—Cleland in the Adelaide Hills and Deep Creek on the Fleurieu Peninsula—have also been converted into national parks, as has Lake Frome Regional Reserve.

In a statement, the government said that “ephemeral salt lake systems such as Lake Froome represent very unique environments that are not widely known and are therefore considered to be of national importance.”

Meanwhile, nearly 5,000 hectares of land that was formerly a conservation park has been incorporated into the Nelpina Ediacara National Park.
