Katie Hopkins is being deported from Australia after boasting about violating quarantine rules
The 46-year-old traveled to Australia to appear on a reality TV show and was in a mandatory 14-day quarantine in a Sydney hotel before filming began.
The far-right commentator’s trip to Australia sparked outrage after the government last week reduced the number of Australian citizens and permanent residents allowed to return home each week to 3,000 in a bid to reduce the risk of COVID-19 leaking from hotel quarantine.
More than 34,000 Australians wanting to return home are still stranded abroad.
Australia’s two largest cities, Sydney and Melbourne, are under lockdown to contain the coronavirus outbreak caused by the most contagious delta variant.
Home Affairs Secretary Karen Andrews said Hopkins would be deported after she boasted on Instagram of her intent to violate quarantine rules.
“It is appalling that this woman is behaving the way she did and she is leaving,” Andrews told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
“We’ll get her out of the country as soon as we can sort that out,” Andrews added.
In an Instagram video that has since been deleted from her hotel room, she said she plans to scare the staff who brought meals to her door by confronting them naked and without a mask.
