“Christmas vs. The Walters” Will premiere on LI

Dean Winters, Shawnee Smith and other actors from “Christmas vs. The Walters” will return to Long Island this week for the New York premiere of their movie, which was shot almost entirely in Suffolk County last year.

Smith, of FX’s Anger Management, and Winters, of HBO’s Divorce, play a couple who wait for a child during the holidays in the family comedy, directed and co-written by Melville-based film director Peter A. Amato.

“Christmas Vs. The Walters,” which also features supporting roles of Bruce Dern, Chris Elliott and Richard Thomas (from the TV classic The Waltons), was filmed primarily in Suffolk County during the 2020 holiday season — the rare domestic film production going forward in shadow epidemic. When the movie is officially released on November 5, Long Island residents will learn about familiar sites like Heckscher Park in Huntington, Stew Leonard’s store in Farmingdale and the homes of Greenlawn’s Harborfield Estates.

“Our motto was, on Long Island, Premiere on Long Island,” D’Amato said. “I think coming back to town for the premiere was important.”

The premiere, an invite-only event, will take place Tuesday at 5 p.m. at AMC Shore 8 in Huntington. Other cast members scheduled to appear include young actress Paris Bravo, who plays Walters’ teenage daughter, and Caroline Aaron (from Amazon Prime’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel). D’Amato will also be attending with one of the film’s producers, Smithtown-based Rob Simmons, who produced the film under the JARS Media Group banner.

The show will be followed by a party at Huntington’s Honu Kitchen & Cocktails featuring live music from Long Islander JD Leonard, who performed the movie’s theme song.
