Chelsea are confident of completing the transfer of Sevilla centre-back Jules Conde, TalkSPORT understands.
The European champions are in advanced talks with representatives of Sevilla and Conde over a £43m deal.
This represents a significant reduction in the £68m release clause in his contract.
If the Blues can top the deal, it would take their spending to around £140m.
Their huge signing was to bring Romelu Lukaku back to Stamford Bridge for £97.5m.
Thomas Tuchel’s side hit the ground in the Premier League as they won their first two matches.
Lukaku scored on his debut for the club and appears to be a real threat to the title.
The addition of Konde will add some serious depth to an already difficult-to-play defense.
The arrival of the France defender would likely lead to the departure of Kurt Zouma, with West Ham the most likely destination.
Jim White from talkSPORT Submit an update on the current situation on Tuesday.
He said: “An agreement has been reached between the two clubs, Chelsea and West Ham, for £30m, but his personal terms are a stumbling block.
“There is a plan B in place for the defender and everything is ready to make it happen.”
Transport expert Fabrizio Romano reported that the “deal is dangerous” with the main issue surrounding the two workers.
Despite the huge spending on signings, Chelsea managed to raise large sums by selling important players.
Tammy Abraham joined Roma for £34m, Fikayo Tomori moved to Milan for £24m, and Victor Moses went to Spartak Moscow for £4.5m.
If the Zuma transfer goes through, it would likely mean an increase of around £90m in player sales.
