Chef Led Lucia Craft Sandwich Expands To Martinez
Sandwich gurus and industry veterans Randy Valdez and Faith Harrison have opened a second location in East Bay for their famous artisan friends.
Lucia Craft Sandwich, specializing in stuffed croissants, grilled cheese and spring focaccia mixed with chef-prepared delicacies such as eggplant puree and walnut pesto, is now served at 6682 Alhambra Ave. in Martinez.
Located in the Virginia Hills Shopping Center, the 1,000-square-foot store, named after the couple’s daughter, feels about twice the size of its original Crockett venue. They opened this location again in October 2020 after Valdez, the chef, was laid off from his job at the Shattuck Hotel. He likely learned a thing or two about the potential of meat, cheese, and bread during his time working with the late Judy Rogers at Zuni Café, too.
Whatever you do, don’t read Lucia’s menu when you’re hungry – their world class flavors and carefully matched ingredients will make your mouth water. Lucia’s offers eight grilled cheeses ($6 – 9), including grilled cheese with prosciutto and figs; Kimchi and bacon. Potatoes, leeks and herbs. Pork, pickle and Dijon mustard.
The ten sandwiches ($12-17) range from customer favorite chicken breast
Oregano, nut pesto, and burrata, to a mini Oregon shrimp sandwich with preserved lemon, red onion and celery, to a “nola” piled high with mortadella, ham, salami, olives, and provolone.
The croissant ($6 to $14) is stuffed with five options, from smoked trout, caviar, and fresh cream to asparagus, goat cheese, and grebech, a classic French sauce made with hard-boiled eggs, cornichons, and capers. There are also four salads ($8-9).
Martinez hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. The original store, located at 611 2nd Ave. At Crockett, it’s open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. For more information, visit www.luciascraftsandwich.com.
