Pearl River, New York (CBS New York) – A fire engulfed a rifle field in Rockland County, spreading to nearby businesses and injuring half a dozen firefighters.
The fire broke out on Sunday noon and continued all night.
Smoke is seen pouring from a shopping center on Middletown Road into the Pearl River.
The Rise business features an indoor gun range and is located below the Dollar General Store and Dunkin’ Café. Its location made the fire difficult and dangerous to fight.
“It’s 20 or 30 feet below grade. There’s no ventilation there. I get a lot of men with carbon monoxide poisoning,” said Jim Morrison, head of the Pearl River Fire Department.
Units from about 20 departments responded, and six firefighters were sent to the hospital.
There is no information on the cause of the fire.
