Boogie Ellis, 24th USC, beat St. Joseph’s at Wooden Legacy – Press Enterprise
Anaheim, CA – Boogie Ellis scored 17 points on 8 of 14, Joshua Morgan added 13 and No. 24 Southern California beat St. Joseph 70-55 Thursday night at Wood Legacy.
Chavez Goodwin scored 10 points and eight rebounds for USC (4-0).
Ellis scored seven points at 19-4 making it 23-9 midway through the first half and leading the Trojans the rest of the way.
Ejike Obinna was 9 of 13 from the field and finished his career with 18 points and 10 rebounds for Saint Joseph (2-2). Taylor Funk added 12 points and eight rebounds.
The second Eric Reynolds scored two goals from 3 throws and Funk added the third goal for the Hawks in the first four minutes of the second half to reduce the difference to 44-37. Isaiah Mobley, high, slashed a rebound pass to Morgan on the baseline for a two-handed dipping, Max Agbonkpolo made a jump in the fairway and Morgan added a layup to extend the lead 13 after about 90 seconds and hawked behind in double figures the rest of the way.
Mobley, whose younger brother Evan was the No. 3 pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, had just four points in a 2-of-8 shootout but added 11 rebounds, three assists, one steal and one block.
The Trojans entered the game averaging 9.2 turns per game — the eighth lowest in the NCAA this season — and committed seven times Thursday and scored 16 points from 15 turns for St. Joseph.
